How it all started…
JP Green began his professional life as a real estate salesperson in Baltimore, MD. A far cry from agriculture JP was an entrepreneur pounding the pavement in Baltimore City, as well as the surrounding counties. After roughly a decade of helping families attain their dream of homeownership the real estate agent, and soon to be farmer, had an epiphany. Healthy foods needed to be grown much closer to the urban markets that rely upon them. The vast food deserts in Baltimore City need addressing and JP Green embarked on a mission to solve the problem.
What we found along the way…
Growing food is actually easy. Obtaining a decent yield without animals and insects eating it first is the hard part. In the past farmers have turned to traditional methods like chemical pesticides to deter predators. Furthermore we have seen farmers deploy herbicides to reduce weed pressure. Chemical fertilizers are also sprayed onto traditional farm fields to increase the size and appearance of produce. These practices have the combined effect of creating poor soil conditions. The poor soil conditions in turn cause the farmer to use more salt based fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. This negative feedback loop is prevalent in large scale farming operations.
Our Mission…
Everything grown on Gifted Greenery Farm is free from salt based fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. We have created and maintain a healthy living soil in which an ecosystem composed of beneficial bacteria, fungi, and insects provide the foundation for vigorous plant growth. Whether providing the local community with produce or fresh cut flowers, Gifted Greenery Farm is making available a nutritious and high quality product. Techniques like crop rotation and the use of cover crops in the offseason help to eliminate the need for herbicides and pesticides. By constantly employing regenerative farming practices we plan to be good stewards for the next generation of farmers. The land we farm will be much more fertile when we leave it than when we arrived.
